Bishop Walsh Addresses the Hispanic Community
In his homily at the concluding Mass of the Feast Day at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel in Traverse City, Bishop Jeffrey Walsh said it is important to recognize that the Hispanic community across the country is experiencing anxiety and fear for the future: "Commending ourselves to God's Providence, I would like to offer you the assurance that the Church will continue to shepherd you spiritually, pool information, resources and advocate for your dignity and family unity.
"We will advocate for immigration policies that are just, humane and reflect the values that make this beloved country a beacon of freedom for the world. May Our Lady of Guadalupe, who reminded Juan Diego that he bore the image and likeness of God, remind all of us today and in the days ahead, that we are beloved children of God, bearing his image and likeness regardless of ethnicity or country of origin."
Traditions of Latin America in Northern Michigan
Songs, joy, memories, hope and deep faith were experienced by families from various Latin American countries who live in Traverse City and surrounding areas as they celebrated the traditional "Las Posadas." Las Posadas is a celebration commemorating the pilgrimage of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem seeking lodging before the birth of Jesus. The celebration begins on Dec. 16 for nine evenings — culminating at midnight Mass on Dec. 24. The tradition includes the nine-day novena prayers, songs and traditional Latin foods. In the midst of winter, Posadas were held in pre-arranged community homes every night. Father Wayne Dziekan, Episcopal Vicar for Hispanic Ministry, led the traditional Latin American Christmas carols with his accordion, supported by members of the community. Also in attendance were other community members who shared their admiration and satisfaction with experiencing these Hispanic traditions.
