The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) provided the OSV the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s announcement to terminate humanitarian parole for beneficiaries of the Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan parole processes:
“The sudden termination of humanitarian parole for people who have relied on this legal pathway is counterproductive to the Administration’s stated goals of promoting respect for the rule of law and reducing strain on American communities. We urge the Administration to consider the adverse impact of this action on citizens and noncitizens alike, especially given the ongoing conditions in several of the implicated countries. Terminating this temporary legal protection that allows people to work, pay taxes, be with family members, and contribute to our society will only lead to more disruption and would appear to risk diverting the focus of enforcement efforts away from legitimate threats to public safety. We continue to urge the Administration to work with Congress on a meaningful reform of our nation’s immigration system that would provide for well-regulated borders and humane, orderly immigration.”
