Looking back on the past year, I am filled with gratitude for the many ways God has blessed me.
Last summer, I returned to formal priestly formation after a year away on medical sabbatical. The year began with significant changes, as I entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and began a new phase of formation known as the Configuration Stage. In this stage, a seminarian works to become more closely conformed to Christ while beginning theological studies.
After completing the spring semester, my classmates and I had the opportunity to take part in a 30-day pilgrimage through Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. Along the way, we visited and prayed at many holy sites, including Fátima, Montserrat, Lourdes, Santiago de Compostela, Ars, Assisi and Rome. It was an incredible experience to encounter the rich history of the Church and witness the faith of so many saints.
When I returned home, I received candidacy for holy orders, an important milestone in formation. Through this rite, the Church formally recognizes a seminarian as a candidate for the orders of diaconate and priesthood and affirms his intention to offer his life in service to Christ and his Church.
Shortly afterward, I traveled to South Dakota for a 30-day silent retreat and the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius. It was a profound opportunity for prayer, reflection and a deeper encounter with the Lord.
I concluded the summer with a brief stay at All Saints Parish in Alpena, where I was blessed to meet many people of God from the northeastern part of our diocese.
I am deeply grateful for the prayers, encouragement and support of the people of the Diocese of Gaylord throughout my formation. God has been so good to me, and I feel truly blessed. As I begin my second year of theological studies, I look forward to continuing this journey and, God willing, one day serving you as a priest.
