At All Saints Catholic School in Alpena, robotics isn’t just about building machines—it’s about building faith. Under the guidance of volunteer coaches Sarah and Jeff Costain, the Holy Gears FTC Team 20159 has become a vibrant space where coding meets Christ and every challenge becomes an opportunity to encounter God.
“Sometimes, this robotics program is what brings children to Christ,” Sarah shares. “I see students discover God through teamwork, problem-solving and even the simplest acts of service.”
Students design, build and program robots, but the true growth happens in their hearts. “Our goal is to show students that God is not separate from what they love to do,” Jeff explains. “Robotics can be a path to him, if we guide them with love and intention.”
Sixth grader Harry Kowalski loves the hands-on learning: “Robotics has everything to help me be a future engineer—I can think, build, create, design, test and learn!” Classmate George Lacross adds, “Life isn’t one straight shot. You’ll always have downfalls, but it all leads to success.”
A Calling to Serve and Inspire
Sarah’s journey began as a parent seeking God for her children. “I never had a strong faith as a child,” she recalls. “When I became a parent, I realized how important God is, and I wanted that for my children and others too.”
Jeff agrees: “When we arrived at All Saints, we saw a school full of potential. Robotics became a way to grow faith and curiosity together.”
Holy Gears follows four principles:
- Dream big
- Work hard
- Give back
- Have fun
Students imagine bold ideas, learn coding skills, serve the community and enjoy the journey. “We go all out because it’s about forming hearts as much as minds,” Sarah says.
That spirit of service shines through. “Robotics isn’t just about a robot,” says robotic team member Olivia Heald. “It’s building a business, supporting our community and setting an example for younger kids.”
