The Diocese of Gaylord announces the passing of the Most Reverend Robert J. Rose, second bishop of Gaylord, who entered into eternal life on March 2, 2022.
Bishop Robert Rose was born on February 28, 1930 and ordained to the priesthood on December 12, 1955. He was ordained and installed as the second bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord on December 6, 1981, an appointment he held until his installation as bishop of Grand Rapids on August 30, 1989. Bishop Rose remained there until his retirement in 2003, and still resided in Grand Rapids to the present day.
“It is with deep sadness that we share this news of Bishop Rose’s passing,” said Bishop Walter A. Hurley, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Gaylord. “He was a devoted shepherd to the people of the Diocese of Gaylord and faithfully served the people of Grand Rapids for many years.
“In this moment of sadness, we reflect in profound gratitude for Bishop Rose’s spiritual leadership, which touched the lives of so many. From his early years as a newly ordained priest, throughout his episcopal ministry, and until his final hour, his devotion to our Lord, and to his vocation, was evident to all around him. We can rejoice in confident hope that he is now united with the Lord he so deeply loved and faithfully served.
“Please remember Bishop Robert Rose in your prayers as he finds eternal rest in his heavenly home. ‘Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Amen.’”
The Diocese of Gaylord will announce the details of Bishop Robert J. Rose’s funeral arrangements in the coming days.
