A Heart that Serves

Feature

At St. Mary School in Charlevoix, the rhythm of daily life often begins in the school office—where secretary Mindy Joy quietly turns ordinary moments into acts of grace. Known for her humility and unwavering generosity, Mindy doesn’t seek recognition; she simply lives her faith through service, making others feel seen, cared for and loved.

“I’ve always believed that small acts of kindness matter,” Mindy says. “We don’t need to do big things to make a difference. God calls us to serve wherever we are.”

Her life reflects the words of Scripture: “The greatest among you shall be your servant.” (Mt 23:11) For Mindy, service isn’t a task—it’s a calling.

Service in Every Moment

From the first bell to the last, Mindy notices needs before they are spoken. A forgotten lunch becomes a warm meal. A child without gloves finds hands covered.

A worried parent leaves comforted by her gentle presence.

“God gives us the chance to be his hands every day,” says Mindy.

Her dedication goes beyond the school day. Mindy regularly helps with after-school events and fundraisers. “Every time we serve, we reflect Christ’s love. I try to do it with joy, not obligation.”

Teaching Faith Without Words

Mindy’s greatest lesson is lived, not spoken. “I try to show the kids that being kind is not just a rule, it is a choice we make every day,” she says.

Her patience, generosity and quiet strength speak louder than words. Students and colleagues witness the power of a faith lived with intention. “Praying, helping, smiling, listening—these are ways to honor God every day,” she says.

Humility shapes her service. She hopes her efforts go unnoticed—a pure offering of love to God and neighbor.

“I want students to see that serving others is not a burden but a blessing,” she explains. Her example shows that living as a good Catholic means noticing needs, acting with compassion and trusting God in every small act of love.

A Legacy of Light

Principal Kathleen Dvoracek calls Mindy “a blessing … She gives of herself unconditionally to all those in need. She is truly radiating the light of Christ.”

Father Peter Wigton echoes that praise: “Mindy is absolutely wonderful…She brings hospitality and service to a new level. Whatever you need, Mindy has it or will get it for you.”

For decades, Mindy has quietly shaped St. Mary into a place where kindness thrives and God’s love is visible. Her own words sum it up best: “If I can make one person’s day better, then I’ve done my job.”
