As summer ends and the school year begins, it can be stressful for both parents and children as new routines are formed. Here are 5 tips for parents to help children have a successful school year from Penny Clemens, the superintendent of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Gaylord.
- Develop family routines. Routines are especially helpful during high stress times such as bedtime and mornings. Healthy sleep and morning routines can ease tension and make these times go more smoothly. The development and continuity of routines, create a sense of stability, ease tense times and builds responsibility as family members each have a role to play in the routine. Remember, to build prayer time into the routine.
- Set device and media limits. In order to foster family time and relationships, it’s helpful to set limits on media including no device times. Plan screen time together as a family; thereby creating trust, connection and communication. As the adult role model, remember to limit your screen time as well.
- Plan out healthy meals, including grab and go items for a busy morning. Whenever possible, make lunches the night before.
- Plan time for family recreation including games, outdoor activities, reading and hobbies.
- Build and maintain a positive relationship with the teacher and school staff. Our kids are watching and listening, if you’re unhappy with the school or staff, try to remain neutral in front of your children. They pick up on our cues and this can impact their attitude and ability to learn.
