Our Lady of the Rosary

During the 16th century, with growing threats from the ever-expanding Ottoman Empire, Catholic powers formed the Holy League to defend Christian civilizations against invasion. On the evening before battle, after receiving a vision of the Blessed Mother, Pope St. Pius V asked the Holy League and all faithful to pray the Rosary, asking for Our Lady’s intercession.

On Oct. 7, 1571 the Ottoman Empire deployed ships for battle in the shape of a crescent, the symbol of Islam; the Holy League’s ships took the shape of a cross. After five hours of battle, the Holy League triumphed in what would become one of the largest naval battles in history.

Today, as we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, we reflect both on the healing beauty and spiritual power of the rosary. Honor our Blessed Mother and pray the rosary: usccb.org/how-to-pray-the-rosary
