In this heightened time of political division and uncertainty, Bishop Hurley welcomes all to join in a time of unified prayer for our civil leaders on the upcoming eve of the presidential inauguration:
St. Mary Cathedral will be offering and livestreaming a Eucharistic Holy Hour for peace in our nation on Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to spend an hour praying together for peace and unity in our country, in our parishes, and within each of our families. The livestream from the Cathedral will be available at www.stmarycathedral.org.
Bishop Hurley states, "The 'Prayer for Our Government' [found below] was first prayed in 1791 by our first bishop of the United States, John Carroll. As you likely know, Pope Pius VI named him America’s first bishop in 1789, and remarkably, his cousin, Charles, was one of our Founding Fathers and the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence.
"[Arch]Bishop Carroll’s prayer for America and our government is just as significant in 2021 as when it was first recited. Today, we too come to the Lord filled with hope for what he has in store for our nation, and humbly ask for his guidance and wisdom for all our civil and religious leaders, and for unity and peace in our country and states."
